VETERANS, CHILDREN, AMERICANISM, AND A STRONG NATIONAL DEFENSE

This is what the American Legion stands for and thanks to all of you for being a part of this organization. We are currently in a battle with those who DO NOT believe as we do about our Children, Veterans, Americanism, and Nat’l Defense. Your Post just took over a Boy Scout Charter that did belong to a local high school. This was because the ACLU has prevented the schools, cities, military bases, and other public entities from sponsoring scouting. They are now attempting to remove the Pledge of Allegiance from our schools, and trying to make public, photos of prisoners in Iraq. This would incite terrorist and create more violence and possible deaths for our troops.
Your American Legion has vowed to fight for the rights of the Scouts and Youth of our Nation all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. BEING A MEMBER DOES COUNT.

FOR GOD AND COUNTRY,

Charles L. White, III

BASEBALL REPORT

Baseball season will begin about May 20, 2006 at Sims Legion Park and we are looking for another great season. This will be the 77th consecutive year that your Legion Post has sponsored a team. Everyone please come out and support your Legion team.
We do need all of the support that we can get not only coming to the games but volunteers to help our Athletic Officer and others in preparing before and after games. Many times once the game is over everyone seems to disappear leaving very few to take care of all the loose ends. Please consider helping whenever you can, we can’t expect you to stay every game but we shouldn’t expect others to do this either.
The Baseball Hall of Fame Banquet will be held next January in Jacksonville, N.C. Since so many others supported our Post last year we are hoping that many of our members will attend this banquet. We may try to get a bus if there is enough interest. If you are interested, please contact either Bill Bowen, Charles White, or Tony Sherrill.

RECYCLE YOUR LEGION MAGAZINES
Whenever you finish with your Legion Magazine, take them to the doctor’s office, barber shop, or somewhere where others can read them. People need to know what we are about.

ORATORICAL CONTEST IN JANUARY
Dates, places and times will be announced.

ADJUTANT’S CALL

As of this newsletter Post 23 has over 65% of their membership quota.
National will probably receive over 200,000 new members into the American Legion this year but our total membership is dropping. We need to be sure that members renew and we recruit as many new members as possible. When Congress looks at our numbers, we DO NOT want them to think that the American Legion is a dying organization. More members help us get their attention and get things done.

MILITARY MUSEUM
We have received the $15,000 from The Glenn Foundation to create a military library upstairs at the museum. The room has been cleared, painted, and the Museum Committee is in the process of having bookshelves made. Things are going extremely well and this is going to be another great showplace for our Museum.
The Military Museum is now open every Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 and hopefully those who have not visited recently will make an effort to come.

BOY’S STATE
Mr. Keith Gordon was our delegate to Boy’s State and was selected to attend Boy’s Nation in Washington, D.C. He also spoke at the N.C. Fall Conference in Raleigh and sure made Post 23 proud.

LADIES AUXILIARY
Hopefully everyone saw the picture in the Oct/Nov. Legion News of our Ladies Auxiliary and their donations to help Rhyne Elementary School and the 505th Engineering Battalion. Congratulations Ladies.
If anyone’s wife or daughter is interested, please call Regina Mayo at 704-861-0170 or Sheila Sherrill at 704-865-9259.

VISITATION COMMITTEE
Post 23 is in the process of forming a committee
to telephone and visit members of our Post who may be sick and/or have not attended recent meetings. This was an idea of Mark Clouse and he has agreed to head the committee and Jack Olive has also volunteered to help. If you can help Mark or if you know of members who need to be contacted, please call Mark at his work number 704-867-4023.
